The Kapoho Point Oceanfront Retreat was burned and completely destroyed covered in 20 feet of lava from the Kilauea lava flow on or about June 5, 2018. The lava flow which began on May 3rd, 2018 in Leilani Estates at the base of Kilauea, has continued unrelentlessly moving north some 5-6 miles and has currently destroyed in excess of 600 homes in the lower Puna region of the Big Island of Hawaii. On or around May 22, lava was about to close both access roads, highway 132 and 137 into the Kapoho Beach Lots. The lava also cut off both electricity and water to the region, resulting in the Hawaiian State Government imposed a mandatory evacuation of the region. At the time of the forced evacuation there was no immediate threat of lava in the Kapoho Beach Lots subdivision, so few people removed any person property from their homes, however, with access to the property closed off, the flow began to increase substantially while the temperature of the lava increased as well. As the lava flow reached the entry road into the subdivision, it followed the lowest terrain where the streets were graded and made a sharp right turn towards the bay and quickly filled the entire bay and spread through the subdivision destroying everything in is way. Even though the Kapoho Point lot remains with the improvements burned and buried under 20 feet of lava, if one were to survey the new lava flow and mark the parcel boundaries, because the bay is now filled with lava and extending an additional mile into the ocean the site is now more than one mile from the ocean instead of being bay and ocean frontage. We have kept the photos of Kapoho Point up on the site as a reminder of the amazing work of the local craftsman who participated in its many thousands of hours that went in the creation of this once beautify resort. We are grateful to all who contributed to this beautiful but short-lived masterpiece.
